The best of Bolivia is contained in this 13-day-long package: the mysthic Sun Island with native inhabitants; La Paz and unbelievable salt flats and desert sceneries; wild and beautiful nature, authentic atmosphere, proud Indians wearing colourful ponchos. These and even more is Bolivia! All that should be seen will be seen. You will not miss anything!
Day 1 – Arrive to La Paz
Arrival to La Paz. You will be met by an English speaking tour guide at the airport. On the way to your hotel you can start admiring this amazing city. The afternoon is at leisure. You can relax or start to discover the city on your own.
Day 2 – La Paz – city tour (B)
Four hours tour discovering La Paz´s multiethnic and cultural character visiting Los Andes street to admire handy artisans manufacturing traditional garments and festivity costumes. Walk around the Witches Market to get acquainted of the mystical rituals and indigenous cosmos vision and see the enormous handicraft market. Continue the tour visiting San Francisco Church, the historical heritage district is around the main square of La Paz “Plaza Murillo”, walk around the Legislative Palace, the Government Palace and the Cathedral. Have a breathtaking view of La Paz at Killi Killi lookout. Later on, go around Miraflores district to see the Open Air Museum about the Tiwanaku Culture. The end of the tour represents visiting the southern residential districts of Obrajes, Calacoto and La Florida located very close to the Moon Valley where you will enjoy of a short walk. Return to the hotel.
Day 3 – La Paz, Copacabana, Sun Island – 2 nights / 1 day (B)
At 07:00 Pick up from your Hotel. Shared transportation to Copacabana. The tour starts in the city of La Paz at 3640 meters above the sea level, and continues along the enormous high plateau all the way to the Titicaca Lake located at 3810 meters above the sea level. You will cross the strait of Tiquina which is the narrowest part of the entire lake, dividing the lake in two: the small section known as Wiñaymarka and the large section known as Chucuito. Continue the trip by the side of agriculture terraces built during the Chiripa, Tiwanaku and Inca civilizations. Arrival at Copacabana and accommodation at Hotel Rosario Lago Titicaca. Suggested lunch at Kota Kahuaña restaurant. (Lunch is not included). Sail on a motor boat towards the southern part of the Sun Island, visit the Pilkocaina Temple and hike towards Yumani village enjoying great views of the Mountain Range of the Andes, walk downhill through the Fountain and the Inca Staircase. Sail back to Copacabana. Suggested dinner at Kota Kahuaña restaurant. (Dinner is not included). Overnight in Copacabana.
Day 4 – La Paz, Copacabana, Sun Island – 2 nights / 1 day (B)
Start exploring Copacabana walking around it’s streets, visit the renaissance style church where you will find the Patron Virgin Mary of Bolivia, the handicraft shops and the local product market. Optional hike up to the “Calvary Hill” where you will see and understand the religious syncretism in Bolivia. Lunch is on your own and then drive back in shared transportation to La Paz. Regroup in the Hotel Rosario Lago Titicaca lobby at 13:00 pm. Departure to La Paz in shared tourist bus at 13:30 pm. Overnight in La Paz.
Day 5 – Santa Cruz (B)
Transfer from the hotel to the airport Flight from La Paz to Santa Cruz Transfer from the airport to the hotel. Overnight in Santa Cruz.
Day 6 – Santa Cruz, Samaipata (B)
08:30 am. A picturesque colonial town 120 kms from the city, being its principal attraction the Inca Fortress (El Fuerte), at 1950 m.a.s.l. is the last bastion of the Incas, where one beholds zoomorphic figures sculpted into the rock, water channels, stairs and niches Stop off to enjoy the crystaline waters of the vegetation-surrounded Cuevas waterfalls. Overnight in Santa Cruz.
Day 7 – Sucre (B)
Transfer from the hotel to the airport. Flight from Santa Cruz to Sucre. Approximately three hours city tour of Sucre. We visit the main museums of the city combining history, textiles, ethnography and folklore with the most representative outdoors sites such as plazas, and parks, as well as the architecture. Textile Museum of Indian Arts ASUR, located in a beautiful colonial neighborhood in Sucre, run by Antropologos del Surandino (ASUR), this excellent museum displays of regional textiles and traditional techniques . This program starts with the goal of revitalizing the traditional Tarabuco and Jalq’a textile areas. It exhibits traditional and contemporary textile production, a valuable Tiahuanaco collection and two music and dances halls. Liberty House, formerly the Assembly Hall of the Jesuit University, where the country’s Declaration of Independence was signed, this house contains a famous portrait of Simon Bolivar. Its construction dates from 1621 as part of the Jesuits convent, later made a part of the building of the University, is the most important national historic landmark. It was a private chapel of the Jesuits and auditorium of the University. Overnight in Sucre.
You can choose 2 museums from the following museums: Liberty House, ASUR textile museum, Recoleta Convent and Museum, San Felipe Nery viewpoint (Liberty House is closed Monday).
Day 8 – Potosí (B)
Transfer from hotel to bus station. You will take the bus to Potosí (3 hours ride). Transfer from bus station to your hotel. The city tour follows. You will visit the most important atractions of Potosí, and see the outside of Compañia de Jesús church, San Lorenzo front, Santo Domingo church, and the mint neighborhood. Overnight in Potosí.
Note: On Saturday and Sundays is open only in the morning. Mondays is closed.
Day 9 – Uyuni (B)
Morning transfer from hotel to bus station. You will take a local bus from Potosí to Uyuni
(the trip takes 7 hours, the bus doesn’t have bathroom and does not include guide). Once you arrive to Uyuni, you will be transfered to your hotel. Overnight in Uyuni.
Day 10 – Uyuni Salt Flats – 3 days / 2 nights (B, L, D)
From Red Planet Expeditions office in Uyuni, we leave at 11:00 am in a Toyota land cruiser 4×4 drive headed for the train cemetery, where we will walk around the historic locomotives. We travel to Colchani and visit a salt miner workshop and the many handicraft shops. Traveling into the Salar, we stop at the salt pyramids where locals collect the salt for processing, followed by a stop of the eyes of Salar – where water bubbles up from under the salt crust. We then have a quick stop at a salt hotel – where everything is made of salt – and you can take pictures and we will have lunch. Departing into the Salar, we head to Incahusasi Island, where hundreds of cacti litter the petrified coral island; allowing for some great photos. We then head west towards the small village of Agua Quisa to spend the night where dinner will be served and a hot shower can be taken (hot shower is 10 Bs.). We will stop multiple times in the middle of the Salar for photos where visitors are welcome to take the popular perspective pictures. Overnight in shelters.
Day 11 – Uyuni Salt Flats – 3 days / 2 nights (B, L, D)
Beginning at 7:00 am we will have breakfast before heading out for our exciting second day of adventure. After an hour long travel, we enter the small Salt Lake of Chiguana in the south of Salar de Uyuni. Surrounded by many dormant volcanoes and a semi-active one (Ollague) the views offer a day full of picture taking. We then head further south to the Andean lagoons where flocks of flamingoes can be seen. Continuing on, we head to the massive Siloli desert (the highest and driest in the world at 4,550m. above sea level). Crossing the desert, we end up at the famous Rock Tree (a lava formation), followed by a stop at the amazing Red Lagoon, with its red water and many flamingoes. The car will then bring us to a shelter to spend the night in the desert where hot chocolate, coffee or tea can be had with a delicious meal for dinner. Overnight in shelters.
Day 12 – Uyuni Salt Flats – 3 days / 2 nights (B, L, D)
Beginning around 5 am, we embark on an hour-long journey up to 5,000 m. to a place called Sol de Mañana where visitors can venture into the smoking crater to catch a glimpse of the boiling water inside. We then travel to a hot spring where you can take a relaxing, bath in the 35 Cº water and warm your bones. We will then have breakfast next to the warmth of the hot springs before visiting the Dali Desert (named after the surrealist painter Salvador Dali) and the mineral waters of the Green Lagoon at the foot of yet another volcano, the enormous Licancabur. At this point we return to Uyuni on a 6 hour drive – stopping periodically to stretch our legs and have lunch – arriving around 18:00 where the tour will end. Bus to La Paz leaves at 20:00 from the Bus Station in Uyuni and arrives next morning at 06:00 to the Bus Station in La Paz. Light dinner on board.
If you want to go Chile on the third day after the Green Lagoon, the company can arrange a transfer bus that will take you to San Pedro de Atacama. The ticket for this bus is included in the tour Price.
Day 13 – La Paz (B)
