TOUR DESCRIPTION
Unique expedition to Ecuador and Galapagos Islands. You will experience atmosphere of Amazon jungle, historical heritage of Quito, unique culture of Inca and pristine nature of Galapagos Islands. The lodge in Amazonia is located at ecuator area and it offers tropical rain forest with true wildlife. Quito is well known as a historical center, it is interesting for its location – close to the top of Volcano. Galapagos will amaze you with its beautiful nature and animals. Great combination of culture, history and wildlife await you in this 16 day tour.
Day 1 – Arrival in Quito
After arriving in Ecuador we will take you to a hotel to relax. The rest of the day is at leisure. Night in the hotel.
Day 2 – Quito City Tour (B)
We will take you after breakfast to this magnificent city for an excursion. The tour starts on the city’s central square (Plaza de La Independencia) and a show-around in the Cathedral. Then we continue to the Presidential Palace, Archbishop Cathedral and an old town hall. A bit further well-known La Compaňía de Jesus with its beautifully decorated interior will enchant you. Church and Convent of St. Francis is our next stop. Here you can admire unique frescoes, the atrium and baroque interior. This old „downtown“ is the historical centre where there are beautiful works of architecture. Our last visit is to Panecillo, a hill that is a natural lookout having an impressive panoramic view of Quito and the surrounding valleys. Return to the hotel.
Day 3 – NP Cotopaxi (B)
Full day trip to National park Cotopaxi around lagoon Limpiopungo. You can hike up to maountain cottage Jose Ribas (4850 above the sea level). Later on, you will continue to town Baňos famous for its spa. You will have enough time to relax in the spa.
Day 4 – Baňos (B)
Full day tour by car to area called Baňos. During the tour, you can borrow bikes and ride along river Pastaza or you can enjoy other activities such as rafting, canopy and horse ride. You will be surrounded by beautiful countryside, you will experience great treks and admire the views of active volcano Tunguragua.
Day 5 – Riobamba (B)
After breakfast, you will travel to town Riobamba with breath-taking views of the highest volcano of Ecuador – Chimborazo (6310 above the sea level). Afternoon, you can enjoy Riobamba city tour.
Day 6 – Nariz del Diablo, Inga Pirca (B)
Today, you will visit the most famous Inca monument. You will start your day by ride to town Alausí and then you will enjoy a ride by train along Nariz del Diablo. Continuation southwards to the archaeological area Inga Pirca. You will have time to discover the Inga Pirca ruins and later on you will reach the town of Cuenca.
Day 7 – NP Cajas, Cuenca (B)
Full day tour to National park NP Cajas (4000–4500 above the sea level), where you will find more than 200 lakes. Aftrenoon, you will enjoy city tour of colonial town Cuenca.
Day 8 – flight to Quito (B)
You will be driven to Cuenca airport for your flight back to Quito. Transfer to hotel close to the airport and overnight.
Day 9 – Lago Agrio, Amazonia (B, L, D)
Today you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Lago Agrio (supplementary charge), in Amazonia. Private transport is arranged for you from the airport to Cuyabeno Reserve, El Puente (approx. 2 hrs). Then you will board a boat and sail along the Cuyabeno River. Keep your eyes open, you can see many birds, butterflies or you can just listen to monkey sounds. Our destination is Laguna Grande, the biggest lagoon in the reserve, close to where you will be accommodated in Samona Camp (tourist level accomodation), which can be upgraded to higher quality accomodation, please see below for more details.
Day 10 – Cuyabeno Reserve, Amazonia (B, L, D)
Thanks to the cabins, partly open to the outdoors, you can be woken up by the bird´s singing. If you get up early enough you may see dolphins swimming in the lagoon at dawn. After breakfast you set out for a hike in the jungle, accompanied by English and Spanish speaking guides who will show you local plants and animals. You may see various frogs, insects, snakes, tapirs or armadillos. A midday siesta in a hammock follows the lunch, before starting a canoe ride to Igapo. Enjoy the lush green vegetation and its fauna. Return back and dinner.
Day 11 – Cuyabeno Reserve, Amazonia (B, L, D)
You start the day with a hike to the jungle for birds´ observation. You will see many orchids, curative herbs and from the fauna among others capybaras, ocelots and armadillos´ burrows. Another, smaller lake will be visited after lunch. You can go piranha fishing, listen to the sounds of macaws and caciques or try to spot an anaconda sleeping on a tree branch. One more excursion waits for you after dinner: caymans´ red eye spotting.
Day 12 – Lago Agrio – Quito (B)
You will be driven to Lago Agrio after breakfast, for your back flight to Quito. Transfer to your hotel and overnight.
Day 13 – Quito – Baltra Airport, Flamingo Lagoon, Isabela
Transfer to the airport and morning flight to Galapagos. Our English speaking guide will be waiting for you at the airport in Baltra, who will take you to the port of Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island) for lunch. Afterwards, we will take the public speedboat to Isabela, which lasts approximately two and a half hours. After arriving at Isabela, we will take a brief rest at the hotel and then head to the Flamingo Lagoon, which is the largest coastal lagoon found in the Galapagos and is one of the main reproductive sites for the majority of flamingos.
Day 14 – Sierra Negra Volcano, Chico Volcano, Concha Perla (B)
Early in the morning after breakfast, we will have a full day tour of the Sierra Negra Volcano. This volcano is located 13 miles from Puerto Villamil and is the world’s second largest volcanic crater, measuring 6 miles in diameter and 300 feet deep. We will hike the crater and enjoy the view of the beach below before continuing on to Volcan Chico, a still active volcano which warms the surrounding ground. In the afternoon, we will return to the hotel and later we will have the opportunity to go snorkeling in Concha Perla, where we will ba able to swim with sea-lions and see a variety of colorful fish, starfish, and sea urchins.
Day 15 – Giant Tortoise Breeding Center, Isabela (B)
Early in the morning, we will take the public speedboat from Isabela to Puerto Ayora, where the guide will be waiting for us in order to take a breakfast and check in at the hotel. Immediately, we will begin our visit to the Highlands of Santa Cruz Island. In this place we can enjoy a wonderful visit to see giant turtles in their natural habitat. After lunch in the highlands, we will return to Puerto Ayora and go to the Charles Darwin Research Station. Here we will have the grand opportunity to see Lonesome George, the last Galapagos turtle of its species, and learn about the ongoing efforts to rehabiliate the tortoise populations throughout the Galapagos Islands.
Day 16 – Santa Cruz, the Twins, Baltra (B)
After breakfast, we will travel to Baltra Airport, but on the way we will stop by “The Twins” (a.k.a. “The Gemelos”), which are similar to craters, but formed by a collapse of the Earth because of the lava flows that passed below it. We will also pass through an escalecia forest, where it will be possible to encounter Galapagos Fly-Catchers and other endemic birds. The tour will end upon the arrival to the airport where you will return to Quito or Guayaquil.
